Diego de Almagro , also known as El Adelantado and El Viejo , was a Spanish conquistador that is credited for being the first Spaniard to discover Chile. He was born in in Almagro, Crown of Castile. He arrived in the New World in in Panama. He lead his first conquest in and founded Villa de Acla. In Almagro was part of the Conquest of Peru along with Pizarro. Almagro helped Pizarro found many of the new cities in Peru.

Following service in the Spanish navy, Almagro arrived in South America in and, with his intimate friend Francisco Pizarro , led the expedition that conquered the Inca empire in what is now Peru. Almagro and Pizarro became joint captains general of these conquests, which the Spaniards called New Castile. Bitter enmity soon arose between Almagro and Pizarro, however, leading to much political instability in the new colony.





When Pizarro, upon the return of Andagoya from his voyage along the western coast of Colombia, conceived the plan of penetrating farther South, Almagro and Hernando de Luciue came to his assistance with funds, and a partnership was formed , leading to a written document executed in , which document both Almagro and Pizarro certified by their marks, neither of them being able to write. In one of his landings Almagro lost an eye by an arrow-shot. He went with Pizarro on the voyage of , during which the first tidings of Peru were obtained on the Ecuadorian coast.
